ERI and the Sidari Center sign a contract to establish an entrepreneurship incubator for recycling electronic waste
Reviewed by Dr. Ayman Ashour, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, a report from Dr. Sherine Abdel Qader Muharram, Head of the Electronics Research Institute, about the Institute’s signing of a contract with the Center for Environment and Development for the Arab Region and Europe “Cedari”; With the aim of establishing an incubator for entrepreneurship in the field of integrated management of electronic waste recycling. The report explained that the project targets a number ranging between 15 - 25 incubators in the field of electronic waste recycling, where the best 10 incubators are selected, according to the evaluation criteria set for that, in preparation for the final stage. In which between 3-5 small and medium companies will be established. The report added that this contract has several main objectives, including spreading awareness of the idea of existing startup companies in the field of electronic waste in Cairo and other governorates, and supporting startup companies in the field of electronic waste in developing models. Its business, technical and legal capacity and ability to carry out the marketing process for its products, and also enhance awareness of sustainable recycling business among the business community in Egypt.
The report stated that the signing of the contract came in line with the Ministry’s strategic plan on the importance of research centers and institutes cooperating with various state agencies and sectors in implementing national projects, and within the framework of the Egyptian government’s implementation of the Sustainable Recycling Industries Project for electronic waste, which was launched in 2016 between the Egyptian government represented by The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, and the Swiss government, represented by the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs of the Swiss government, in continuation of the path of fruitful cooperation between the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology and the Institute, and on the sidelines of the sixth meeting of the Supreme Committee to follow up on the cooperation agreement between Egypt and Switzerland regarding this project. Dr. explained. Sherine said that the signing of this contract is considered a continuation of the implementation of the institute’s strategic plan, and the activities and axes that were agreed upon in the cooperation protocol signed between the three parties in 2021, noting that this protocol resulted in three contracts to implement its various axes, including the aforementioned contract, adding that it was agreed upon. The next meeting of the Supreme Committee for the agreement between Egypt and Switzerland will be held at the headquarters of the Electronics Research Institute. The contract was signed by Dr. Sherine Muharram, Head of the Electronics Research Institute, and Dr. Nadia Makram Ebeid, Executive Director of the Sidari Center, in the presence of Engineer Khaled Al-Attar, Deputy Minister of Communications and Information Technology for Digital Transformation and Automation, and Dr. Mahmoud Fakhr El-Din, supervisor of the scientific departments and central laboratories at the institute, and Dr. Hossam Allam, Regional Director for Sustainable Growth in Sidari, and Dr. Ghada Moghni, Senior Program Coordinator for Sustainable Growth at Sidari, and Dr. Michel Harari, Deputy Director of the International Cooperation Office, and Dr. Iman Radwan, Senior Program Officer at the Swiss Embassy in Cairo, and Dr. Mathias Scheulp, Executive Director of the World Resources Forum in Switzerland, and Mr. Arthur Harmann, Program Consultant in Switzerland.
