Meeting of Prof. Dr. Sherine Mohamed Abdel Qader Muharram, Prof. Dr. Hossam Allam, Regional Director at CEDARE, and Ms. Ghada Mughni, Program Coordinator
within the framework of the increasing rates of digitization and the trend towards digital transformation within the framework of the strategy of building a digital Egypt, and with the increase in the use of modern and advanced technologies day after day, today no place in the Arab Republic of Egypt is devoid of personal computers of all sizes and different types, or mobile and smart phones and screens. And electrical and electronic devices of all kinds, as these devices are no longer luxuries, but rather have become a necessity of life that cannot be dispensed with, and as a result of this increase in the quantities of consumed electronics, which result in the end of their lifespan or lack of need for large quantities of electronic waste over the course of It is expected that these activities will generate many times more electronic waste than is now generated.
Within the framework of the Electronics Research Institute’s current strategy to establish a central research laboratory to test components of electronic waste and conduct the necessary studies for their reuse, Prof. Dr. Sherine Mohamed Abdel Qader Muharram, Acting President of the Electronics Research Institute, met with Prof. Dr. Hossam Allam, Regional Director of the Sustainable Growth Program at the Environment Center And development for the Arab region and Europe CEDARE, and Professor Ghada Mughni, the program coordinator, and in the presence of Professor Dr.Mahmoud Fakhr Head of the unit of a special nature at the Institute and head of the e-waste sub-committee, emanating from the National Committee for Waste Recycling.
The axes and methodology of cooperation between the Electronics Research Institute and the Regional Center for Environment and Development for the Arab Region and Europe and between the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology in implementing the initiative to reuse and recycle electronic waste, and the meeting discussed many important points related to this initiative, including the establishment of a central laboratory at the Institute to test electronic components. Providing practical training for researchers and working as a research laboratory in the region for e-waste. This is in addition to providing TOT training for researchers from various disciplines within the institute on e-waste based on the developed SRI curriculum. It was agreed that the training would target the various stages of recycling; From dismantling, testing, quality control and finally reassembly.
It is worth noting that the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology, in cooperation with the Electronics Research Institute, is currently developing a study of a roadmap for the electronic waste recycling industry - the circular economy through the main researcher of the project, Professor Dr. Electronics in Egypt and methods of electronic waste treatment at the level of Egypt, Arab and African countries in order to propose a roadmap for the electronic waste industry in Egypt.
At the end of the meeting, the guests made a tour of the headquarters of all the central laboratories of the institute to get acquainted with the possibilities available at the institute.
