Project Title | Wind Turbine Simulator Design and Implementation |
Project PI | DR.khaled sakoury |
Project Abstract | In the wind energy conversion system, the wind turbine captures the wind energy. Then the generator changes it to the electrical power. So the characteristic of the wind turbine is very important. For some laboratories that don’t have the practical wind turbine, it is very convenience to use the wind turbine simulator instead of the real wind turbine. Researchers at Electronics Research Institute have directed a lot of their research work to Wind Energy Conversion Systems. But most of the experimental work done till now is conducted regardless the true characteristics of the wind turbines. This project introduces the structure and characteristic of the wind turbine simulator for Wind energy conversion systems using a DC motor. The wind turbine simulator consists of a microcontroller, an AC- DC converter, a DC motor and a control desk on the computer. The control desk obtains the wind speed and calculates the theoretical torque of a real wind turbine by using the wind turbine characteristics and the rotation speed of the DC motor. Then the output torque of the DC motor can be regulated by controlling the armature current. Hence, the converter driven DC motor can work like a real wind turbine. After concept verification, the PC control disk shall be replaced by a stand-alone microcontroller card to get a compact control system. The required fund shall cover the sensors, electronic components and accessories, the converter and the controller while the DC motor is available in the Power Electronics and Energy Conversion labs. The fund will also cover visits to the National Renewable Energy Authority NREA Wind Energy sites and factories interested in wind system components. The proposed system shall facilitate the research in the field of wind energy conversion systems. Installing many simulators may be required to study wind farm performance. Smart grid studies also utilize the wind simulators |
Project Objectives | The importance of this project lies in providing an opportunity for the researcher - in the field of wind electric power generation - to conduct research in the actual operating conditions, this work in increasing the efficiency of research outputs. |
