Project Title | Digital Library Construction ( Phase 1) : computers and systems department |
Project PI | Dr.Hesham Farouk |
Project Abstract | Digital library (DL) repositories are powerful systems that allow institutions to store their digital documents while permitting interaction and collaboration among users in their organizations. In ERI, we own an enormous, invaluable scientific content represented as books, master and Ph.D. theses, publications and scientific datasets that need to be maintained, introduced and distributed. Most of this valuable scientific content is not indexed properly and not well introduced to ERI researchers and consequently, cannot be accessed easily since not kept in a common physical library. In this phase of the project (phase I) we will focus on the first stage of the DL construction which include data collection, digitization and annotation, i.e., metadata assignment of the scientific content owned by computers and system department and releasing the collection internally through offline website. Our objectives from the project can be summarized as: introducing the huge scientific content we have in different forms, assisting ERI members in their research taking the full advantage of ERI resources, anytime availability of the DL content, multi-user access of the DL content, eliminating the need to manage print collection, improving appreciation and image of library, and finally, contribution to building expertise and experience for future digital library projects Creation, maintenance and provision of services using digital library collections require several resources. Two major resources required for setting up and operating digital library collections are: technology infrastructure and Personnel. Technology infrastructure includes computing and other equipment, software and network connectivity. Personnel will be required for handling various tasks associated with the creation and maintenance of the collection. The facilities provided by ERI to implement the project is mainly in the personnel requirements. A few of the required equipment is available but still most of the required hardware and software requirements are not yet in hand. Librarians and IT staff will be hired for training and server administration and interface programming. Our project offers a lot of aspects not available for physical libraries: time and space saving, low maintenance cost, no physical boundaries, round the clock availability, multiple access, information retrieval, added value and easier access. |
Project Objectives | -Electronics Research Institute: Creating and maintaining a massive infrastructure for digital information and data -Electronics Research Institute: The digital library (books, theses, scholarly papers, scientific databases, etc.) produced in the final phase of the project is invaluable and will be available to researchers internally -Universities, research centers and bodies: (Enhancing the scientific standing and future financial resource of the Institute) by allowing the external use of the final content of the library by universities and organizations through an annual subscription (after the third stage) -Scientific Outcome in Research and Dissertations: Members can work on research topics related to the project (digital library construction, image processing and information retrieval) and make use of the collected data to design and evaluate their systems. |
