Project Abstract | Education in Egypt has a lot of problems; shortage of teachers and crowded classes are examples of these problems that affect the education efficiency. All these problems lead to a lack of interactions between the student and the teacher which affect the ability of student achievement. Increasing in using internet allows creating of new learning media that overcome the shortage of teachers, and crowded classes. However, local tutoring systems don’t grantee efficient learning. They lack the personalization of the system interactions and do not provide diagnosing of the student weak points. Educational technologies, especially intelligent tutoring systems technologies, which try to simulate the human tutor activities, present a solution to these problems. Our prototype is the first step towards the development of personalized educational software in Egypt that has the potential to promote the efficiency of the learning process with lower cost compared to what spent in private tutoring. The prototype has the ability to model the student knowledge and problem-solving skills through the student interactions with the system. Moreover, the system has the ability to generate different difficulty level questions which can be presented according to the student model. In addition, the system has different teaching strategies to support the student through the problem-solving process. The prototype aims to raise the efficiency of the student whatever his/her knowledge level and skill. Our prototype is a web-based application and can be reached anytime, anywhere. As an example, the prototype addresses Math story problems as they are used to train students on several skills. The prototype was used by a number of students through interactive graphical user interface designed to support students during the problem-solving process. |
Project Objectives | Produce customized software for interaction in the field of story problems and have the following characteristics: - Ability to form detailed story problems for each student and control the level of difficulty of the problems in different dimensions. - Modeling different student skills and discovering his own mistakes associated with misinterpretation of the story problems. - Instructing the student to solve verbal problems by fragmenting them into separate steps. - Support the student levels of different feedbacks and graduated by providing the correct answer. |
Project Deliverables | A prototype of web based intelligent tutoring system for story problems that has the potential to generate story problems with varying degrees of difficulty. In addition, the system has the potential to support students in multiple ways in solving these story problems by dividing the main question into several questions to help the student solve the problem. It also provides him with various feedbacks to help him diagnose and repair his mistakes. Moreover, the software has the ability to model student information by storing its interactions and inferring its strengths and weaknesses. |
