Organizing A Workshop entitled Assessing carbon emissions and plans developed to reduce carbon emissions at the Institute
Dr. Ayman Ashour Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, stressed the Ministry’s interest in the climate change file, noting that this file received the attention of universities, centers, institutes and research bodies, especially during the period when the Arab Republic of Egypt hosted the activities of the 27th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. COP 27”, which was held in November 2022 in Sharm El Sheikh, explaining the importance of research projects that aim to confront the impacts, risks and potential threats that follow climate change, such as carbon emissions.
In this context,ERI organized a workshop on carbon emissions entitled Assessing carbon emissions and plans drawn up to reduce carbon emissions, under the patronage of Dr. Sherine Abdel Qader Muharram, President of the Institute, in the presence of all members of the Institute from the research and administrative staff, at the Institute’s headquarters in New Nozha.
Dr.Sherine Abdel Qader said that organizing the workshop came within the framework of considering sustainable development as one of the most important goals of the Electronics Research Institute, which was formed by developing a general strategy for applied research while preserving natural resources and promoting research work, noting that the Institute is developing its research and scientific studies in the field of applied research from By combining responsibility and innovation, and creating a positive social impact, while ensuring that scientific research is compatible with a clean, green and sustainable environment.
The head of the institute added that the workshop included three lectures, namely: (Climate change: governance and solutions), (Awareness of the carbon footprint and the water footprint of various activities and introducing the most important scientific terms recognized for environmental footprint calculations), (Calculating the carbon footprint from various sources during the operational phase of the research institute). Electronics for the year 2022).
Dr. Shirin said that one of the most important goals of these lectures is to provide environmental awareness of the causes of climate change and its risks and how to confront it and work to rationalize consumption, as well as awareness of the carbon footprint and water footprint of various activities and the introduction of scientific terms related to the topic of the workshop such as greenhouse gases, climate and global warming. An explanation of how the temperature rises was also provided. land due to greenhouse gas emissions and the environmental and economic impacts associated with the climate change process in Egypt and the world, as well as addressing the various ways to reduce these emissions. Methods of linking environmental footprint calculations - which help us to calculate the area of land required by an individual's life - were also explained, as the more The value of the ecological footprint indicates the individual’s depletion of available resources, which has become greater than what the Earth can bear.
The President of the Institute directed the researchers to pay attention to green research and projects, and reviewed many projects that had been completed, such as solar panel manufacturing projects, a wireless sensor network project for better agriculture, a portable heating device project directed to eliminate the red palm weevil and others, and the establishment of a waste recycling plant. Electronic, in addition to taking many administrative measures that have been taken, including activating the digital documentary cycle in preparation for the complete transformation of digital documents, separating waste at the source for easy recycling, using LED lights with motion sensors for lighting, establishing two photovoltaic power stations and connecting them to the electricity network, and using a BMS system to control and monitor the Around the clock to reduce energy consumption and reduce carbon emissions for energy-intensive systems.During the workshop activities, the nature of climate change, its causes, the political steps taken at the world level, and the international conferences of the parties from the Kyoto Conference to the Sharm El-Sheikh Conference through the Paris Agreement were introduced, in addition to presenting the steps taken by Egypt to confront climate change, and discussing the national strategy for climate change, where the Introducing the most important provisions of the sustainable development strategy: Egypt’s Vision 2030, which stipulates that by 2030 the environmental dimension will be a fundamental focus in all development and economic sectors. It was also presented how civil society and individuals can participate, and the role of scientific research in solving the problem of climate change.
The outputs of the Institute’s first carbon footprint calculations report for the year 2022 were also presented, which is one of the most important measures taken by the Electronics Research Institute. To contribute to reducing carbon pollution, the workshop dealt with calculating the total carbon emissions that were reduced through the Institute’s implementation of the solar panel system for generating electricity and through the Institute’s implementation of the green cover system and planted trees, the main component of carbon absorption.
At the conclusion of the workshop, Dr. Sherine thanks the lecturers from the National Research Center who lectured at the workshop activities, stressing the importance of the discussions that took place during the workshop and the topics raised influenced many ideas and solutions to confront carbon emissions.Present at the workshop from the National Research Center, Dr. Abdul Hamid Awad, former head of the Environment and Climate Change Research Institute, Dr. Hanan Sayed Abdel Rahman, Professor of Waste Treatment Technology, Environment and Climate Change Research Institute, Dr. Mohamed Eid, Assistant Research Professor, Environment and Climate Change Research Institute.
